A Madera man was sentenced on Monday to a year and a day in prison for assaulting a Veterans Affairs employee, U.S. Attorney Eric Grant announced.

According to court documents, Luis Alamo, 43, punched a Veterans Affairs employee on the sidewalk outside the VA Hospital in Fresno on Nov. 10, 2025. After punching the employee, Alamo swung a knife at the employee but missed.

Alamo plead guilty to the charge on Dec. 15, 2025.

U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston handed down the sentence.
