A 37-year-old man was killed early Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle while walking in traffic on southbound  Highway 99 in Fresno, and the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol Fresno Area said it first received a report at about 12:10 a.m. of a Toyota Prius stopped in the fast lane on the transition road from Highway 99 to Highway 180 eastbound, with the driver reported running from the area. CHP officers found the unoccupied vehicle with the engine running and the driver’s door open.

The vehicle was not damaged and was not involved in a crash, and it was removed from the roadway.

At about 12:45 a.m., CHP received multiple 911 calls reporting a pedestrian running in and out of traffic on southbound Highway 99 near Fresno Street. About three minutes later, additional calls reported a pedestrian had been struck south of Belmont Avenue.

Investigators said the pedestrian was walking within the traffic lanes when a 22-year-old man driving a Subaru Impreza southbound in the far-left lane struck him. The pedestrian and the vehicle came to rest in the middle lane of southbound Highway 99.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. The driver suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

CHP said the driver was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested. The investigation is ongoing, and it is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were a factor for the pedestrian. Toxicology results are pending through the Fresno County Coroner’s Office, CHP said.
