Volunteers for the Kings River Fisheries Management Program’s annual fish survey are needed Dec. 2-4.

The program is seeking volunteers to assist biologists to conduct the program’s annual fish population survey from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. About 25 to 30 volunteers are needed.

  • Tuesday, Dec. 2, Wildwood near Trout Lake
  • Wednesday, Dec. 3, Greenbelt on Piedra Road near Green Belt park

The program is set to host an additional survey event with Fresno City College on Thursday, Dec. 4. However, that date was postponed once and may be canceled due to weather conditions or lack of volunteers.

“We will be cancelling if we do not get enough volunteers,” Lori Werner, an environmental resource analyst for the Kings River Fisheries Management Program, wrote in an email.

The Dec. 4 event will be held on Piedra Road.

Once registered, volunteers will receive detailed instructions.

Data Collection Aids the the Kings River Fishery

Using electrofishing equipment, which shocks but does not harm the fish, biologists and volunteers will collect data including size, density, the fish’s condition and the variety of fish in the river.

SJV Water attended the event three years ago and produced a video on how it all works.

The program works in collaboration with Kings River Conservation District, Kings River Water Association and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), and aims to improve and enhance the lower Kings River and its fish habitat.

The program offers other educational events such as the trout release, another popular annual event and a monthly river cleanup.

Interested persons are encouraged to contact Lori Werner, an environmental resource analyst for the program at 559-237-5567 #122 or lwerner@krcd.org.
