A routine call about a suspicious vehicle turned tragic Monday when deputies discovered a deceased woman in Nelder Creek, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Deputies responded to the vehicle, which had veered off Highway 41, crossed a bed of granite rock, and stopped near the creek. The driver was not at the scene.

After canvassing the area, deputies located the woman in the creek below.

Due to the steep terrain, the Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Technical Rope Team assisted in recovering the body.

Investigators determined the vehicle was connected to a missing person case from Clovis.

Clovis police notified the woman’s next of kin, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities said no foul play is suspected, and the cause of death will be determined by autopsy.
