San Francisco (3-1) suffered its first loss of the 2025 season on Sunday, falling to the Jaguars, 26-21, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
Second-year pro Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings both entered Sunday with their respective injury statuses in question. But, both avoided the inactives list and were able to play against the Jaguars.
However, throughout the course of play on Sunday, both Pearsall and Jennings found themselves banged up once more.
Pearsall came down hard on his right knee during the third quarter. Pearsall exited and was examined in the 49ers’ medical tent. The 6-foot-1, 189-pound receiver did briefly return to play before exiting once more.
Afterwards, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an injury update on Pearsall. Shanahan revealed that Pearsall’s Sunday injury was in the opposite knee from what was ailing him earlier this week in practice.
“It was the other knee. We’re not sure yet,” Shanahan said of Pearsall’s status moving forward.
Then, Jennings was crunched on a successful two-point conversion try midway through the third quarter. Jennings would return to the contest.
San Francisco also saw tight end Jake Tonges exit with what Shanahan described in postgame as a shoulder/stinger. Tonges would return.
Given the existing injuries for the 49ers to tight end George Kittle and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, San Francisco really needs that trio to be healthy moving forward.
Purdy Has Three Turnovers in Return
The 49ers saw the return of starting quarterback Brock Purdy on Sunday after he missed a pair of games with a toe injury.
Though Purdy’s day was marred by a trio of turnovers, Shanahan said Purdy’s performance wasn’t related to any lingering effects from his toe injury.
“You can ask him. I don’t think so,” Shanahan said if Purdy’s toe injury factored into his Sunday performance.
“We’ve all got to do better. He had some good plays today, but we’ve all got to do better today. I saw some inconsistency with our whole offense. Moved the ball, but really killed ourselves on four different turnovers. Two were fumbles and two were picks. One was off a tip, one was just out of reach of Christian (McCaffrey) is what it looked like.”
