An 87-year-old Fresno woman was killed and two drivers were hospitalized after a head-on crash Sunday evening on Highway 41 north of Road 406, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened around 7:37 p.m. when a 30-year-old Oakhurst woman driving a northbound Honda Accord veered into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a Ford Escape driven by a 63-year-old Fresno woman, CHP said.

Both vehicles sustained major damage and came to rest blocking the roadway.

Despite efforts by bystanders and medical personnel, the Ford’s passenger, an 87-year-old Fresno woman, died at the scene.

Both drivers suffered major injuries and were taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

Witnesses Say DUI Suspect Driving Erratically

CHP said witnesses reported the Honda driver had been passing cars illegally before the crash.

She was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and other charges and will be booked into Madera County Jail once medically cleared.
