On Nov. 4, California will hold a special election for Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to redistrict the state’s legislative maps. Fresno County will need election workers.
The Fresno County Clerk/Registrar of Voters is accepting applications for election worker positions until Friday, Sept. 5 through the FresnoCountyJobs.com website, according to a news release. Applications must be received before 4 p.m. on Sept. 5.
Fresno County Clerk James Kus told GV Wire the department is hoping to hire 50 additional election workers, adding two additional workers at each expected vote center.
“Even just 20 new elections workers, strategically utilized, will improve service delivery and help to reduce potential lines on Election Day,” Kus said in an email.
Workers will be needed at locations throughout the county and include support for in-person voting, basic IT support, and office-based activities. Election workers will receive paid training and will get a minimum 36 hours during the election, including overtime.
November Experience Will Give 2026 Applicants a Leg Up
Those selected will be given preferred job opportunities for all elections in 2026. Applicants who can speak Spanish, Chinese, Hmong, Khmer, Korean, Laotian, Punjabi, Tagalog, or Vietnamese are eligible for increase pay if hired.
High school juniors and seniors, as well as college students are also encouraged to apply. Election worker positions can help fulfill community service requirements, the release stated.
Gov. Gavin Newsom called for the redistricting vote — under Proposition 50 — in response to President Donald Trump’s call for Texas to redistrict their maps and give him more Republican representation. The redrawn Texas maps were signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday.
In a previous interview with GV Wire, Kus estimated the special election vote will cost the county between $3 million and $4 million.
