Clovis police are urging residents to stay vigilant after two people fell victim to a sophisticated fraud scheme, resulting in the loss of more than $250,000, the department said in a statement.

Authorities say an elderly resident was scammed out of $238,000 over five days last month after a fraudulent pop-up appeared on their computer. In a separate case this month, another Clovis resident lost $15,000 after receiving a deceptive email.
The scam involves victims being contacted through pop-ups or emails that appear to be from legitimate financial institutions, police said.
The suspects then convince victims that their bank accounts have been hacked and instruct them to withdraw large sums of money.

The victims are told to hand over the cash to a supposed security officer, with the promise that their funds will be returned once their accounts are secure.
Clovis police previously arrested two suspects in December 2024 in unrelated fraud cases involving similar tactics. However, there are currently no leads in the most recent scams.

Authorities advise residents to be cautious of unsolicited messages requesting financial transactions, verify communication directly with their bank, and warn elderly or vulnerable individuals about these scams.
