The Fresno Police Department issued 140 citations during a bicycle and pedestrian safety operation on Saturday, the department said in a statement.

The operation, which ran from noon to 10:00 p.m., targeted traffic violations involving drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Of the citations, 109 were issued to drivers for violations such as failure to stop at stop signs, unsafe speed, using a handheld wireless device while driving, and failure to stop for red lights.

In addition, 31 citations were given to pedestrians and cyclists for various code violations.

During the operation, 112 drivers were contacted by officers.

This enforcement effort is part of a city-wide initiative funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The department plans another bicycle and pedestrian safety operation in May.
