The Global Wellness Summit predicts spending on wellness tourism to skyrocket from $830.2 billion in 2023 to more than $1.3 trillion in 2028. Clearly, healthy holistic travel is still a major interest and is growing among older generations. Whether consumers want a yoga retreat, a spa experience on a cruise or a sound bath in the woods, travel companies scramble to accommodate the ever-growing demand for the coming years.

Current growing wellness travel trends are as multifaceted as each consumer. However, specific trends are emerging this year, and customers are all too eager to sign up for the experience.

Wellness Travel in High Demand

The wellness travel industry was a $792.35 billion business in 2023, according to a report from Zion Market Research, which covered markets in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. The estimated worth from 2024 through 2032 is expected to reach $1.84 trillion.

The same report states that North America will be the leading region during this period. The United States will contribute the most towards this trend due to its high disposable income, availability of multiple travel options, and the ease and availability of online booking. But which trends are consumers leaning towards the most?

According to Conde Nast Traveler, the top five requested wellness travel trends are mental wellness retreats, women’s health-focused programs and sleep-focused vacations. Also at the top of the list are digital detox retreats and personalized wellness experiences.

Mental Wellness

As stress grows, people seek out services to help stabilize their mental wellness. Popular wellness retreats that offer services such as neurofitness training and psychedelic-assisted feedback are in increasing demand. These neurofitness programs maximize clients’ brain function, helping them reach peak mental performance.

Women’s Health

Women feeling the pinch of stress and trauma or even more significant life changes also seek tailored programs that focus specifically on their needs, such as menopause, fertility and even postpartum care. According to a report from Finn Partners, sexual health for women is driving its fair share of this consumer market. Companies bring on gynecologists and hormone experts to guide women further down their road to better health.

Bella Bucchiotti at xoxoBella says, “When I plan a wellness vacation, I’m looking for a place that lets me truly unwind – whether that’s soaking in hot springs, indulging in delicious food or just having a moment of quiet away from the daily chaos. As a new mom and business owner, I don’t want to come home from a trip feeling like I need a vacation from my vacation. Spending extra on wellness travel is 100% worth it because when you invest in feeling good, everything else in life benefits – your energy, creativity and patience.”

Sleep Health

Consumers are willing to pay premium prices for a good night’s sleep when sleep comes at a premium. Sleep-focused vacations honor the importance of rest and offer services focused on combating insomnia and building better sleep habits. Consumers love using sleep tech gadgets such as trackers, smart beds, sleep pods, earbuds and goggles. However, over time, expected trends will likely evolve from gadgets to services such as circadian medicines and chronotherapies.

Digital Detox

One bad habit that consumers are increasingly looking to avoid, to the surprise of no one, is the digital habit. Digital detox retreats offer a reprieve from the increasing concerns over technology addiction. These vacations encourage guests to unplug and engage in mindful activities.

Customized Retreats

Beyond those specific trends, people want customization. Personalized wellness programs and experiences offer highly specific wellness journeys where the entire experience is tailored specifically to the individual and their own health goals. With nomadism on the rise, consumers want to stay longer to reap the benefits of customized plans.

Driving Markets

According to the same report from Finn Partners, “wellness sabbaticals – described as people taking three weeks or more to focus on their health and wellness while staying connected with work through their smart devices are a growing segment of the overall market.” The trend came on the heels of remote work and digital nomadism. Solo travel is likely to be a driving factor overall, according to Forbes. Many companies are training staff to accommodate single travelers and even go so far as to adjust menus and order odd numbers of chairs. This spills heavily into the wellness market as solo travelers also desire wellness journeys.

Alex of Delish Knowledge says, “When booking a cruise, I always look for the availability of healthy meals, preferably vegetarian or vegan options, whenever I travel. As a dietitian, I recommend that clients focus on high-fiber foods the first few days of travel to help offset any GI issues that can arise, especially when traveling overseas. As a bonus, I appreciate it when properties include fitness classes as part of their wellness package; yoga after a long plane flight is a must.”

Just Relax

In recent years, the shift in consumer demand towards wellness retreats and experiences has seen a significant boom, with the Global Wellness Summit also predicting wellness tourism to jump to over a trillion in 2028. Travelers increasingly seek experiences that offer relaxation and promote physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The growth in this market is encouraging rapid changes within the travel industry to accommodate the growing demand. Consumers want to rest, relax and return to better health. With this push, the industry will continue to evolve and accommodate wherever it is needed, which is likely to bring change that no one will mind seeing.
