A recent Rasmussen Reports survey reveals that most Americans don’t believe mass layoffs of federal employees would benefit the economy. The poll, conducted from Feb. 11-13, found that only 29% of respondents think laying off 100,000 federal workers would be good for the economy.

According to the survey, 48% of American adults believe such layoffs would have a negative economic impact. Ten percent say it would have no effect, while 13% are unsure. These results are largely consistent with a similar poll conducted in 2011.

The survey, which included 1,326 American adults, also asked respondents to compare the work ethic of government employees to those in the private sector. However, the specific results for this question were not provided in the report.

“Suppose the federal government laid off 100,000 workers to help reduce government spending. Would laying off 100,000 federal government workers be good for the economy, bad for the economy, or have no impact on the economy?” was one of the key questions posed in the survey.

The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence, indicating a high degree of reliability in the results.

These findings suggest that despite ongoing debates about government spending and efficiency, most Americans remain skeptical about the potential economic benefits of large-scale federal workforce reductions.
