Update: The children have been found.

Original Story

Authorities in Kings County have issued an Amber Alert for two young children after deputies discovered their mother dead from a gunshot wound Tuesday afternoon, the Kings County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Deputies responded around 4 p.m. to a welfare check at a home near Orchard Drive and 4th Place in Hanford, where they found the woman dead.

Detectives identified Jonathan Alexis Maldonado-Cruz, 23, of Hanford, as the suspect.

Investigators believe Maldonado-Cruz left the home around 1 a.m. Tuesday with his two children, ages 2 and 3, in a gray 2020 Hyundai Elantra with California license plate 8LZD084.

With assistance from the California Highway Patrol, authorities issued an Amber Alert in an effort to locate the children.

Anyone with information on the case or the whereabouts of Maldonado-Cruz and the children is urged to contact detective Tyler Haener at (559) 670-9320 or (559) 852-2818, or Kings County Sheriff’s Dispatch at (559) 852-2720. Anonymous tips can be provided at (559) 852-4554.
