The Teamsters union has announced that more than 18,000 Costco employees are prepared to strike if a new labor agreement isn’t reached by Jan. 31.
Members voted by an 85% margin to authorize a strike, CBS News reported. The union is demanding ‘the best wages and benefits in the industry’ for its workers.
“Our members have spoken loud and clear — Costco must deliver a fair contract, or they’ll be held accountable,” stated Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien. He emphasized that workers won’t continue past the contract expiration date without a “historic, industry-leading agreement.”
While specific demands haven’t been disclosed, the union is pressuring Costco to respond with a “meaningful counter” to their proposals. This comes as Costco reported $250 billion in annual revenue and $7.4 billion in net profits in late September.
