Fresno police identified Richard Castrillo, 42, as the suspect in an officer-involved shooting stemming from a family dispute Tuesday night at an apartment complex.

Richard Castrillo, 42, is in critical but stable condition at CRMC. (Fresno PD)

Castrillo is in critical but stable condition at Community Regional Medical Center.

Lt. Bill Dooley said in a news release Thursday afternoon that Castrillo will be charged with assault with a firearm and being a felon in possession of a gun.

The shooting happened at about 7:30 p.m. near First and Brown Avenues in east-central Fresno.

Police said that after Castrillo shot a family member, officers arrived and ordered him to drop his weapon. When Castrillo refused, officers fired their weapons.

The family member allegedly shot by Castrillo also was taken to CRMC.

Third Fresno PD Shooting in 2023

This is the third officer-involved shooting for Fresno PD in 2023. The department has four at this time last year, Dooley said.

The first officer-involved shooting of 2023 took place near a Walmart at Herndon and Ingram avenues in early March. It is being investigated by the state Attorney General’s Office.
