A road rage incident turned violent when a driver assaulted another motorist with a weapon before fleeing the scene, the California Highway Patrol said in a Tuesday statement.

CHP officers saw the suspect’s vehicle speeding at 75 MPH and passing over double yellow lines near Auberry Road and Summit Mountain Road in Prather, starting the high-speed chase.

The pursuit escalated, reaching speeds near 100 MPH, the authorities said.

Officers had assistance from Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies and CHP air support, helping ground units track the vehicle to Alluvial Avenue and Fresno Street in Fresno.

Authorities said the suspect was safely taken into custody without further incident.

He now faces charges for assault and evading law enforcement, according to authorities.

His vehicle was impounded for 30 days due to the pursuit.
