A sergeant from the California Highway Patrol Central Division seized approximately 5 pounds of fentanyl valued at $227,000 during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 in western Fresno County on Wednesday, authorities reported in a Friday afternoon social media post.

The sergeant pulled over an Audi Q7 near Russell Avenue and discovered the driver was unlicensed and exhibiting signs of potential criminal activity.

After obtaining consent to search the vehicle, the officer found the fentanyl packaged in a paper bag on the right rear seat.

Anthony Cruz, 24, of Oakland, was arrested on multiple felony charges, including possession of fentanyl for sale and transportation of fentanyl across non-contiguous counties.

He was booked into Fresno County Jail.

The case has been handed over to the Fresno High Impact Investigation Team, a coalition that includes personnel from various law enforcement agencies including the FBI and local sheriff’s offices.
