A Coca-Cola distributor has initiated a voluntary recall affecting more than 10,000 cans of the popular soft drink after discovering potential plastic contamination in select products, according to Today.com.

The recall, which was voluntarily issued on March 6, involves 864 twelve-packs distributed exclusively in Illinois and Wisconsin. This amounts to 10,368 individual cans that may contain foreign plastic material.

On March 24, the Food and Drug Administration classified the situation as a Class II recall, which indicates “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The affected products are specifically identified as Coca-Cola Original Taste in 12-fluid-ounce cans with the UPC code 0 49000-00634 6. The 12-can packs carry UPC code 0 49000-02890 4. Consumers should check for date code SEP2925MDA and time stamps between 1100-1253.

While the FDA has publicized details about the affected products, the agency has not provided specific guidance for consumers who may have purchased these items. Additionally, there have been no reports of illnesses connected to the contaminated products at this time.

This recall comes as President Trump continues to push for stricter food safety regulations across the country, though this particular incident appears to be isolated to the two midwestern states.
