The battles of World War II were still raging in Europe and Asia when Pacific Bible Institute first opened its doors at 1095 N. Van Ness Ave. in Fresno on Sept. 18, 1944, to 28 students.

Fresno Bible Institute, established by the Mennonite Brethren, was renamed Fresno Pacific University in 1997 and is a private Christian university headquartered on Fresno’s southeast side.

On Wednesday, college officials invite the community to join in Fresno Pacific’s 80th anniversary celebration starting at 10 a.m. in the Warkentine Culture and Arts Center with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and special guests at College Hour.

And what birthday party would be complete without cake? Attendees will get cupcakes and the chance for a photo op with mascot Sunny the Sunbird.
