Clovis Unified School District marked a significant milestone in its history with the grand opening of its latest educational facility, Satoshi Hirayama Elementary School, on Thursday.

The event brought together educators, students, and community members to celebrate and honor the legacy of Satoshi “Fibber” Hirayama.

“This is an exciting day for the Hirayama Elementary community and the Clovis South area as a whole,” said Dr. Stephanie Hanks, assistant superintendent for the Clovis South Area and Clovis Unified’s 35th elementary school. “I’m honored to be part of this celebration and proud to add Hirayama to an area that will be cohesive, competitive, and cutting-edge while simultaneously establishing our Longhorn legacy.”

Satoshi Hirayama — a celebrated Fresno State athlete, veteran, and long-time educator in Clovis Unified — exemplified hard work and dedication throughout his life.

Dr. Corinne Folmer, superintendent of Clovis Unified School District, emphasized the significance of the school’s namesake in her remarks.

“Harayama Elementary is named after an individual whose legacy is one of hard work, integrity, and deep commitment to others,” Folmer said. “As we open this school, we are not just opening a building; we are establishing a foundation for a culture that will inspire generations of students to come.”

The opening ceremony also featured a heartfelt speech from Satoshi Hirayama’s son, Kevin, who expressed the family’s pride in the new school.

“What a facility. Every time I come out here I’m just like, man, this is impressive,” Kevin Hirayama said. “And Dr. Folmer, school board, anybody that had anything to do with school being named after our father, thank you very much.”

Laura Reynolds, the Principal of Satoshi Hirayama Elementary, highlighted the school’s mission and the impact it will have on its students and the community.

“We believe that by focusing on the four key pillars of honor, empathy, attitude, and trust, our students will have a strong foundation to be successful here at Hirayama,” Reynolds said.

Reflecting on the significance of the day, Kevin Hirayama added, “This is unreal. Unbelievable. I never thought this would happen, but seeing it all come together is absolutely amazing.”
