Californians will soon have more options for securely storing their driver’s license or state ID on mobile devices, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday.
The new features will enable residents to add and display their California driver’s licenses and ID cards using iPhones, Apple Watches, and Android devices. These capabilities are part of the DMV’s expanded mobile Driver’s License pilot program.

These options will allow Californians to present their driver’s license or ID card via Google Wallet or Apple Wallet at selected businesses, Transportation Security Administration airport security checkpoints, and certain apps. This feature offers a more convenient way for residents to verify their identity while maintaining greater control over sharing their information.
To date, more than 500,000 Californians have added a mobile driver’s license to their phones through the California DMV Wallet app. The pilot program is limited to 1.5 million participants.

While digital IDs in Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, or the California DMV Wallet app add convenience, they do not replace the requirement to carry a physical card.
