A third candidate has entered the race for the Fresno Unified School Board in the Fresno High Area. Emma Villa, who is identified as “teacher/advocate/mother,” qualified for the ballot on Thursday, according to the Fresno County Elections Office.

Villa joins incumbent Andy Levine and Fresno County Board of Education Trustee James Martinez in the November election.

She could not immediately be reached for comment Friday.

The deadline to qualify for the ballot in that race is 5 p.m. Friday.

The other three Fresno Unified trustee areas also are competitive, with Roosevelt Area incumbent Elizabeth Jonasson Rosas being challenged by Fresno State student Joseph Aquino, a former Fresno Unified student trustee, and Hoover High Area incumbent Claudia Cazares facing a challenge from retired Fresno Unified teacher Dan Bordona.

Central Unified Trustee Incumbent Files

In Central Unified, incumbent Phillip Cervantes filed his candidacy for reelection to his Area 3 seat and qualified for the ballot on Thursday. He is facing a challenge from educator Natalie Chavez.

Central Unified’s Area 6 still had no candidates as of Thursday afternoon. Incumbent Jeremy Mehling told GV Wire on Thursday that he probably would not seek reelection because of family and work obligations.

If Mehling does not file his candidacy by 5 p.m. today, the filing deadline is extended to Wednesday, Aug. 14.
