Jerry Beggs, 56, of Squaw Valley is suspected of shooting and killing a lifelong friend, Burton Jones, 49, also of Squaw Valley, on Wednesday.

Beggs has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being held at Fresno County Jail, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Charges against Beggs are pending a review by the District Attorney’s Office.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday when sheriff’s dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a shooting in the 38000 block of Squaw Valley Road. Deputies arrived at the scene to find Jones lying outdoors with a gunshot wound.

Despite deputies’ efforts to administer medical aid, Jones succumbed to his injuries.

Upon investigation, deputies identified Beggs, the property owner, as the shooter. He was taken into custody at the scene.

Homicide detectives and members of the Crime Scene Unit conducted interviews and gathered evidence. Preliminary findings indicate that Beggs and Jones had an altercation before the shooting.
