The Iranian consulate in Syria’s capital, Damascus, was obliterated in a lethal air strike, allegedly carried out by Israel. The attack resulted in the death of seven officers from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, a high-ranking commander of the Quds Force, and his deputy, according to Iranian officials.
The governments of Iran and Syria have denounced the attack, which also obliterated a building adjacent to the Iranian embassy.
No Comment from Israel's Military
Israel's military hasn't commented on the incident, but has previously admitted to conducting numerous strikes on targets in Syria in recent years, which it claims are associated with Iran and its allied armed groups.
These strikes have reportedly intensified since the onset of the Gaza war in October last year.
Syria's defense ministry reported that Israeli aircraft targeted the Iranian consulate building from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights. While some of the launched missiles were intercepted by Syrian air defenses, others hit their target, causing complete destruction of the building and casualties to those inside.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian described the strike as a violation of international obligations and conventions, calling for a serious response from the international community.
