Fresno State University and its Athletic Director, Terry Tumey, are parting ways. Tumey, who has held the position since August 2018, oversaw several significant changes in the university’s athletic department.
It was a mutual decision by the university and Tumey, according to published reports.
During his tenure, Tumey secured a partnership with Adidas for athletic gear and hired several notable coaches, including Kalen DeBoer and Jeff Tedford. DeBoer is now the head football coach at the University of Alabama. Tumey also brought on Leisa Rosen, who led the volleyball program to an NCAA Tournament appearance in her first year.

Controversies and Challenges
However, Tumey’s tenure was not without controversy. The university cut its varsity lacrosse, men’s tennis, and wrestling teams. Additionally, the Bulldogs failed to secure a move to a larger conference amid a reshuffling in the wider college sports landscape.
Tumey also initiated the “Elevate” campaign aimed at improving athletic facilities. However, the campaign’s financing plan was questionable, and voters twice rejected Measure E, a proposed sales tax in Fresno County to fund these and other improvements.

In a statement, Tumey expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Fresno State community.
“We have faced and defeated many challenges. And although much remains to be done, I leave with confidence that our contributions have made a positive impact on the lives of others,” he said.
Fresno State President Dr. Saul-Jimenez Sandoval also released a statement, thanking Tumey for his six years of dedicated service and wishing him well in his future endeavors.
