A 25-year-old Madera man was arrested Wednesday after Fresno County sheriff’s deputies said he drove about 100 mph, nearly struck a pedestrian in a crosswalk and led authorities on a pursuit before being taken into custody.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as Lewis Alvarado, who was booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, evading police, and driving on a license suspended for a DUI. He later posted bond and was released with a future court date scheduled.
According to the sheriff’s office, a sheriff’s sergeant saw a blue 2003 Honda Accord traveling at approximately 100 mph on Ashlan Avenue in Fresno late Wednesday afternoon. Deputies said Alvarado nearly hit a pedestrian using a crosswalk before the sergeant attempted a traffic stop.
Authorities said Alvarado refused to stop, prompting a pursuit that ended near Van Ness and Shields avenues, where he pulled over and was arrested.
California Highway Patrol officers responded to conduct a DUI evaluation and determined Alvarado was over the legal limit for alcohol consumption.
