A 19-year-old Firebaugh man was arrested after authorities said he robbed a seller during a Facebook Marketplace meetup and used pepper spray on people who chased him.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said Jared Williams was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of robbery and illegal use of tear gas. His bail was set at $30,000.
According to deputies, the incident happened around 10 a.m. Saturday when a buyer and seller arranged to meet near an orchard at Ashlan and San Diego avenues in Firebaugh to complete the sale of a laptop computer.
Investigators said Williams allegedly took the laptop and ran. The seller and two family members chased after him, prompting Williams to drop the laptop before pepper spraying those pursuing him. He then fled the area, authorities said.
Deputies later identified Williams as the suspect, located him and arrested him.
Officials Remind Public to Be Cautious
The Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public to use caution when arranging in-person online marketplace transactions.
Officials recommend meeting in public, well-lit locations with security cameras, bringing another person when possible, avoiding carrying large amounts of cash, using secure payment methods and trusting your instincts if a transaction does not feel safe.
