A 59-year-old man was arrested Saturday after a robbery at an Ace Hardware store in Visalia, according to police.

The Visalia Police Department said officers responded at about 11:36 a.m. to the store on Walnut Avenue for a reported robbery. Investigators learned a man entered the business and took a weed eater. When an employee tried to intervene, the suspect allegedly said he had a knife.

Police said the suspect left the store but was followed by an employee to the area of Woodland Street and Vassar Avenue, where he was taken into custody without incident. No weapon was found, according to authorities.

The stolen weed eater was recovered and returned to the business.

The suspect was identified as William Mack.

He was booked into the Tulare County Adult Pre-Trial Detention Facility on charges including robbery, petty theft with a prior conviction, and giving false information to a peace officer, police said.
