Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday welcomed the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s approval of operating license renewals for the Diablo Canyon Power Plant, securing the state’s largest carbon-free power source through 2030.

The renewals complete a process in 2022 under Senate Bill 846 to prevent the plant from closing prematurely. Diablo Canyon, which supplied about 10% of California’s electricity and 16% of its zero-carbon power in 2024, will continue providing electricity, Newsom’s office said.

“Today, I welcome the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s approval as we continue California’s clean energy transition, creating good-paying jobs, fighting climate change, and cementing the Golden State as a global powerhouse,” Newsom said.

While the federal licenses extend through 2044 and 2045, state law limits operations under SB 846 to 2030, with any further extension requiring legislative approval.
