The Fresno Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Friday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location aimed at removing impaired drivers from the road, the department said.
Checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing higher incidents of impaired driving-related crashes.
Police stressed that impairment isn’t limited to alcohol; some prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as marijuana, can affect driving. Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and a suspended license.
The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
