A passenger was killed Wednesday afternoon in a head-on crash at an intersection in Fresno County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded around 3:30 p.m. to the collision at Central and DeWolf avenues. A preliminary investigation found a Ford F-250 traveling eastbound on Central Avenue slowed to make a left turn onto northbound DeWolf Avenue, while a Toyota Camry was traveling westbound toward the same intersection.

Authorities said the driver of the Ford turned left in front of the oncoming Toyota, failing to yield the right-of-way. The Toyota driver braked but was unable to avoid the crash, striking the right front of the Ford.

The driver and passenger in the Ford, both wearing seatbelts, were not injured.

The Toyota driver, who was also wearing a seatbelt, suffered major injuries. After the crash, he attempted to flee on foot but collapsed a short distance away in a nearby orchard due to his injuries, officers said.

The Toyota’s right front passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained critical injuries and died at the scene, CHP said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
