The Fresno Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint Saturday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location.
Officials said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes, with the primary goal of promoting public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
Police reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect a driver’s ability, and while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
Drivers charged with a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.
The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
