A suspected drunk driver caused a head-on crash on Highway 140 Sunday evening, injuring three people, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred around 7:29 p.m. east of Rogers Road, when Francisco Nicholas Juan, 46, of Merced, was driving a 2011 Toyota Prius eastbound and crossed into the westbound lane for unknown reasons, CHP said.

A 25-year-old woman driving a 2011 Nissan Altima and a 30-year-old female passenger, both from Newman, suffered major injuries. Juan also sustained major injuries. All three were transported by air to Modesto-area hospitals.

All occupants were wearing seatbelts. CHP said Juan was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI.
