A Wednesday probation search in Visalia led officers to discover a live explosive at a residence, police said.

Just before 10 a.m., a Visalia Police Department Special Enforcement Unit officer, along with a probation officer, made contact with Ruben Zayas, 37, who is on probation, near Church Street and Myrtle Avenue.

The contact led officers to Zayas’ residence in the 600 block of South Church Street.

During a search of Zayas’ room, officers discovered an item resembling a grenade.

The Visalia Police Department Bomb Unit was called to the scene and safely took custody of the device, which was later confirmed to be a live explosive.

Zayas was arrested and booked on charges of possession of an explosive device, police said.
