A Merced County traffic stop led to the arrest of a 20-year-old driver on suspicion of driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol’s Merced area office said on Thursday.
A CHP officer stopped the driver for failing to stop at a posted stop sign. During the stop, the officer determined the driver was impaired and arrested them for DUI. Open containers of alcohol were also found inside the vehicle, CHP said.
Authorities noted that California enforces a zero-tolerance policy for drivers under 21. Any measurable amount of alcohol while driving is illegal for underage drivers, and impaired driving at any age poses a risk to everyone on the roadway.
CHP said what began as a single traffic violation quickly escalated into a serious public safety issue with potentially lasting consequences.
Officials urged drivers to plan a safe ride if alcohol is involved, emphasizing that responsible choices can help prevent injuries and save lives.
