A 2-year-old child and a 28-year-old woman were killed in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning at the intersection of Jefferson and Walnut avenues in Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol said.
The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office identified them as Samantha Kellogg, 28, and Elena Kellogg, 2, both of Fresno. The coroner identified them as mother and daughter.
The collision occurred about 10:15 a.m. when a Honda Civic traveling northbound on Walnut Avenue failed to stop at a posted stop sign and entered the intersection, directly into the path of a Chevrolet Tahoe traveling eastbound on Jefferson Avenue, a through street with no posted stop signs, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Both vehicles overturned after the impact. The Tahoe came to rest upright, while the Civic landed on its side.
The Tahoe was driven by a 17-year-old male with a 16-year-old male passenger. Authorities said both juveniles were wearing seat belts, sustained minor injuries and were transported to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The Civic was driven by Samantha, with Elena as a passenger. Authorities said both occupants were unrestrained and confirmed there was no child safety seat in the vehicle. Samantha died at the scene, and Elena was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where she later died.
Investigators said impairment is not suspected, though it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors. Toxicology results are pending through the Fresno County Coroner’s Office, CHP said on Wednesday.
