A 2-year-old child and a 28-year-old woman were killed in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday morning at the intersection of Jefferson and Walnut avenues, authorities said.

The collision occurred at about 10:15 a.m. when a Honda Civic traveling northbound on Walnut Avenue failed to stop at a posted stop sign and entered the intersection, directly into the path of a Chevrolet Tahoe traveling eastbound on Jefferson Avenue, a through street with no posted stop signs, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Both vehicles overturned after the impact. The Tahoe came to rest upright, while the Civic landed on its side.

The Tahoe was driven by a 17-year-old male, with a 16-year-old male passenger. Both juveniles were wearing seat belts, sustained minor injuries, and were transported to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The Civic was driven by a 28-year-old woman, with a 2-year-old female toddler as a passenger. Authorities said both occupants were unrestrained, and investigators confirmed there was no child safety seat in the vehicle. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The toddler was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where she later died.

CHP did not say whether the woman was the child’s mother.

Investigators said impairment is not suspected, though it is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors. Toxicology results are pending through the Fresno County Coroner’s Office. The crash remains under investigation.
