The often play-it-safe San Francisco Giants took a big roll of the dice on Wednesday, dipping into the college ranks to hire a new manager.

In fact, the Giants went where no big-league team had gone before. They hired Tennessee’s Tony Vitello, who has never coached in professional baseball.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Tony to the Giants family,” said Buster Posey, San Francisco’s president of baseball operations. “Tony is one of the brightest, most innovative, and most respected coaches in college baseball today.

“Throughout our research, Tony’s leadership, competitiveness, and commitment to developing players stood out. … We look forward to the energy and direction he will bring, along with the memories to be made, as we focus on the future of Giants baseball.”

Vitello, 47, compiled a 341-131 record in eight seasons at Tennessee. Under Vitello, the Volunteers reached the College World Series in 2021, 2023 and 2024 — highlighted by winning their first national title in 2024.

The Giants fired veteran MLB skipper Bob Melvin on Sept. 29 after two seasons as their manager. The Giants finished 81-81 in 2025, one win better than in 2024.

“I’m incredibly honored and grateful for this opportunity,” Vitello said. “I’m excited to lead this group of players and represent the San Francisco Giants. I can’t wait to get started and work to establish a culture that makes Giants faithful proud.”

Vitello emerged as the Giants’ top candidate after former Giants catcher Nick Hundley withdrew from consideration.
