GV Wire’s Edward Smith talks with KMPH Fox 26 “Great Day” anchor Liz Gonzalez about a new state law that imposes another round of taxes on new market-rate homes, apartments, and commercial buildings.

Assembly Bill 130 allows cities to use those housing taxes — which are based on the vehicle miles traveled daily by residents — to help finance affordable housing projects.

On Thursday, the Fresno City Council will consider and potentially vote on its VMT plan. To mitigate the new fees that builders and, ultimately, home-buyers will have to pay, city planners developed a list of 24 projects funded by the VMT tax — mostly pedestrian walkways and new or expanded bus routes.
