Madera County’s new Chief Administrative Officer is Matthew Treber, who has had a big hand in spurring economic development there.

The Board of Supervisors promoted Treber to CAO in a unanimous vote on Tuesday morning. He succeeds Jay Varney, who announced his retirement in August and left the position on Sept. 19. Varney had become the county’s top executive when COVID upturned local governments.

“I’m incredibly honored and humbled at the opportunity to lead this incredible organization, and I remain committed to serving our community with integrity, collaboration, and purpose,” Treber said in a statement.

Treber became Chief of Development Services in 2020, overseeing the Economic Development, Public Works, and Water and Natural Resources departments.

He has led the county’s strategic planning, which has resulted in population and economic growth. One of the projects he has overseen is Rio Mesa. At buildout, the community will span 19,000 acres, 26,000 residences, and more than eight million square feet of commercial space.

“We have full confidence in Mr. Treber, and the board looks forward to working with him to advance innovation, accountability, and service to the residents of Madera County,” said Supervisor Chair Leticia Gonzalez.

County officials said that Treber’s work is highlighted by fostering collaboration across multiple departments to streamline development and improve community outcomes while
protecting Madera County’s natural resources.
