The first day of fall was Sept. 22, but Californians won’t change our clocks until much later in the season.
Daylight saving time, a time change considered by many as being pesky, began on March 9. In fact, a Gallup poll from January found 54% of Americans aren’t in favor of daylight saving time. That’s compared to the 73% who were in favor in 1999 when Gallup last measured people’s opinions on daylight saving time.
In California, voters took it even further in 2018 when they passed Proposition 7, authorizing the Legislature to go to standard or daylight saving time year-round. Seven years later, there has been no change in the state — that would require a two-thirds majority in the Legislature, the governor’s signature and congressional action — and that hasn’t happened.
In 2022, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved the Sunshine Protection Act that would make daylight saving time permanent, however the U.S. House of Representatives did not pass it and former President Joe Biden did not sign it.
Before taking office, President Donald Trump said in December that he aims to put an end to daylight saving time and make standard time year-round. That hasn’t happened yet either.
California and much of the United States observe this long-running practice of adjusting their clocks one hour forward.
But in the final full month of fall, we turn our clocks back an hour. Here’s when.
When Does Daylight Saving Time End?
Daylight saving time comes to an end at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, when we “fall back” and set our clocks one hour back. States that observe daylight saving time, like California, must begin the time change and end it on federally mandated dates, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. So, daylight saving time always ends on the first Sunday in November.
When Does Daylight Saving Time Start Again?
The clocks will change back for daylight saving time on March 8, 2026.
