Russell Wilson’s 14-year tenure as an NFL starting quarterback might have finally come to an end today.

The New York Giants benched Wilson and plan to start rookie Jaxson Dart in Week 4 and beyond.

Adam Schefter reported the news on Twitter at 9:26 a.m. PST.

Wilson entered the league in 2012 with Seattle and quickly became the greatest QB in franchise history. While he’s the all-time passing leader for the Seahawks by a large margin- 37,059 yards to Matt Hasselbeck’s 29,434 as the runner-up- the ‘Russ’ of late has been far from the complete field general of his prime.

Anyone who watched Week 3’s Sunday Night Football game saw the writing on the wall. Years of evading sacks and playing behind less-than-stellar offensive lines have taken a toll on his best traits. As a smaller quarterback, he kept himself available with elusiveness over the years- but he’s now in uncharted territory as a dual threat quarterback who’s gone this long. These capabilities have hardly ever even lasted a decade in any case.

Wilson is undoubtedly a future Pro Football Hall of Famer. He holds a super bowl ring, ten pro bowls, and excellent stats. Hopefully, he can rebuild his relationship with the Pacific Northwest’s lone professional football organization post-playing career and we get to see him raise the 12 flag one day.
