A man believed to be standing on railroad tracks was killed after being struck by a Metrolink train in the Camarillo area on Saturday, authorities said.
The incident happened just before 1 p.m. near East Pleasant Valley Road, west of Calle San Pablo, said Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Tyler Abbot. The man died at the scene.
He was identified by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office as a 52-year-old man from Thousand Oaks on Sept. 16. The agency said the cause of death was suicide.
“He just kind of got in front of the train,” Abbott said, noting authorities were investigating the case as a likely suicide.
The train, Metrolink Line 1163, left Union Station in Los Angeles at about 10:30 a.m. The incident happened between the train’s Camarillo and Oxnard stops and caused the tracks to be closed, said Metrolink spokesperson Laurene Lopez.
There were 26 passengers on the train. No one was reported injured, Lopez said. They remained on board at the scene of the incident for more than three hours because it was an unsafe area to disembark, Lopez said. The tracks finally reopened at about 4:30 p.m. and the train continued its route.
Metrolink’s website warned of the possibility of other delays in Ventura County. Another train, Line 1162 heading toward Los Angeles, was canceled because of the accident. The passengers scheduled to ride that train were transported to their destinations by a Ventura County Transportation Commission vehicle, Lopez said.
