Detectives arrested a man on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and child neglect after his 1-year-old daughter was found “unresponsive” inside a car and died in the View Park neighborhood of Los Angeles County on Tuesday, Sept. 9, authorities said.

Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Marina Del Rey Station first responded just after 3 p.m. to a report of “a child who was found unresponsive in a vehicle” in a residential neighborhood in the 3800 block of Chanson Drive, the agency said in a written statement.

“Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel also responded and pronounced the child deceased at the scene,” the statement said.

Following hours of investigation, deputies arrested the child’s father, 40-year-old Edwin Wallace Johnson, on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and child neglect, according to sheriff’s officials and county booking records.

Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s officials identified the victim as 1-year-old Maeve Blakely-Johnson.

The cause of death was yet to be determined through an autopsy.

No further details were released as the investigation continued on Wednesday.

The suspect was released from custody Wednesday morning pending legal proceedings after posting $25,000 bail, records show.

Anyone with information was urged to contact the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Tips may also be provided anonymously to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
