During the San Francisco 49ers‘ 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on Sunday, Kyle Shanahan’s team lost tight end George Kittle to a hamstring injury, and with Kittle landing on injured reserve on Tuesday, the six-time Pro Bowler will miss at least the next four weeks as well.

With that, San Francisco is left with Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges at the position on their 53-man roster and Brayden Willis on the practice squad. And while the 49ers may be willing to consider adding a free agent tight end to their roster, they’ll probably find more talented options on the trade block.

Could the 49ers Land David Njoku?

Interestingly, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox identified the 49ers as a top landing spot for tight end David Njoku in a trade this week.

“The 29-year-old isn’t an elite tight end, but he’s a more proven playmaker than what most other franchises have at the position,” Knox wrote. “An offer just below what the Pittsburgh Steelers paid for DK Metcalf this offseason might get a deal done.”

Njoku played collegiately at Miami from 2014-16 before the Cleveland Browns took him in the first round (No. 29 overall) of the 2017 NFL draft. Since then, he’s appeared in 107 games for the Browns, catching 354 passes for 3,806 yards and 30 touchdowns while making the Pro Bowl in 2023.

Knox predicts that San Francisco can get the trade done for a conditional third-round pick, which is a selection that could be in a lower round if the player doesn’t meet certain conditions.

Njoku could fill in for the 49ers as their top tight end until Kittle returns and then could form a formidable duo alongside him.
