The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Seattle Seahawks 17-13 on Sunday at Lumen Field to move to 1-0 on the year, but the victory came with the loss of tight end George Kittle, who will miss multiple weeks with a hamstring injury.
Kittle was impressive in the first half, catching four passes for 25 yards and the team’s first touchdown before the injury cost him roughly three quarters of the game.
Without Kittle, the 49ers have Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges on the 53-man roster and Brayden Willis on the practice squad, but if they were interested in bringing in more veteran talent at the position, there are a few guys still available.
Next Up?
Here’s who the 49ers could sign to make things easier for quarterback Brock Purdy until Kittle returns:
Jordan Akins
Akins, 33, played collegiately at UCF from 2014-17, earning All-AAC honors once before the Houston Texans took him in the third round (No. 98 overall) of the 2018 NFL draft. After four seasons in Houston, Akins had a cup of coffee with the New York Giants, went back to Houston for another year and spent the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. In 107 career games, he’s caught 206 passes for 2,277 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Nick Vannett
Vannett, 32, played at Ohio State from 2011-15, winning a national championship in his final season. The Seahawks took him in the third round (No. 94 overall) of the 2016 NFL draft. Since then, he’s also had stops with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Denver Broncos, New York Giants, Houston Texans, Los Angeles Chargers and Tennessee Titans. He’s currently on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad. In 111 games, he’s caught 108 passes for 1,012 yards and nine touchdowns, but just last year he recorded 17 receptions for 135 yards and a career-high three touchdowns.
Hayden Hurst
Hurst, 32, played at South Carolina from 2015-17, earning All-SEC honors in his final season before the Baltimore Ravens took him with the 25th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. He’s also played for the Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Chargers. In 88 career games, he’s caught 203 passes for 1,975 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Ross Dwelley
Dwelley, 30, played at San Diego from 2013-17, earning all PFL honors three times. He signed with the 49ers in 2018 as an undrafted free agent. He spent six seasons in San Francisco and one in Atlanta. He spent this past offseason back with the 49ers but was released during training camp. In 101 games, he’s caught 45 passes for 523 yards and five touchdowns. While those numbers aren’t overly impressive, he has plenty of experience in the system.
