The Fresno Police Department will hold a DUI checkpoint Saturday from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location, the department announced.
Checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing areas with higher incidents of impaired driving crashes, police said.
Authorities said the primary goal is to remove suspected impaired drivers from the road and promote public safety.
Police reminded drivers that impairment isn’t limited to alcohol, noting that some prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect driving.
While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
First-time DUI offenders in California face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and a suspended license.
The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
