A new Berkeley IGS Poll finds strong disapproval among California voters of how President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement policies are being carried out in the state, with wide partisan divides shaping opinions.
Overall, 69% of voters statewide disapprove of the administration’s approach, compared with just 29% who approve. Disapproval is especially high among Democrats, with 95% opposed, while 79% of Republicans back Trump’s strategy. Independents lean heavily against the policies, with 72% registering disapproval.
The poll highlights deep splits on specific enforcement proposals. Nearly three in four voters (73%) oppose expanding ICE raids into schools, hospitals and other public places, including 94% of Democrats and 53% of Republicans.
73% Don’t Want Law-Abiding Undocumented Immigrants Deported
Similarly, 73% oppose deporting undocumented immigrants who have lived in the U.S. for years without criminal records. Voters also reject the administration’s bid to end birthright citizenship, with 70% opposed statewide. Democrats overwhelmingly disapprove at 92%, while two-thirds of Republicans support the proposal.
Perceptions of ICE raids further illustrate the partisan chasm. About 64% of Californians say they feel “enraged or sad” when seeing news reports of raids, while 22% report feeling hopeful. Democrats express anger almost unanimously, while Republicans are more likely to view raids as delivering justice.
Support for immigrant access to higher education is strong. By a 67% to 28% margin, voters favor California’s public colleges and universities providing admission and support to all qualified students, including DACA recipients and the undocumented.
This poll “suggests that immigration might be a more nuanced issue for the state’s Republicans in some respects, a factor that will likely influence how loudly state and city lawmakers will continue to speak out against federal enforcement actions,” said IGS Co-Director G. Cristina Mora in a news release accompanying the poll.
The survey of 4,950 registered voters was conducted online Aug. 11–17 in English and Spanish and has a margin of error of +/-1.5 percentage points. Funding was provided in part by the Los Angeles Times.
