A California Highway Patrol stop on Highway 99 in Fresno early Thursday led to the arrest of a driver on suspicion of DUI and drug charges after officers discovered more than 20 pounds of marijuana inside the vehicle.

The incident began around 4 a.m. when officers stopped to check on what appeared to be a disabled vehicle on the shoulder, CHP said. Instead, they found the driver urinating on the roadside.

Officers determined the driver was impaired and arrested him after finding the marijuana inside the vehicle.

CHP Fresno said checking on stranded motorists is part of its duty to keep people safe. In this case, it also meant removing an impaired driver and drugs from the road.
