A two-story home in Fresno was destroyed in an accidental fire Thursday afternoon, but a quick-thinking neighbor helped the seven residents safely escape, the Fresno Fire Department reported.

Firefighters were called just before 3:30 p.m. to the 400 block of North Thesta Street, where the first unit encountered heavy flames.

The fire’s threat to a nearby home led officials to call in additional crews.

Downed power lines in the backyard created hazards and limited firefighter access.

A total of 40 firefighters battled the fire. One sustained an eye injury but was treated on scene, officials said.

Authorities said the home is a total loss.

The American Red Cross is assisting three adults and four children displaced by the fire.
