The Sanger Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. at an undisclosed location.
Police said checkpoint locations are chosen based on data showing where impaired driving-related crashes occur.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Officer Julian Rodriguez said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
Authorities reminded drivers that impairment can come not only from alcohol but also from prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana.
While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
First-time DUI offenders face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended driver’s license, the department said.
The checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
